Tariffs Come to Town

Congress is in session today as Washington reacts to President Trump’s global reciprocal tariffs announced last week. Over the weekend, the Senate passed a repeal of certain Canada-focused tariffs. Still, its future in the House remains uncertain, especially as lawmakers leave town Friday for a two-week recess.

Meanwhile, House Republicans plan to advance their version of their budget reconciliation blueprint this week, which would go further than the Senate’s bill. House lawmakers will also take up last week’s legislative agenda after breaking earlier than expected; bills up for consideration include repeals of various Biden-area regulations and proof of citizenship requirements for voter registration.

  • This week, legislation moving through expedited procedures primarily concerns VA operations and veterans’ benefits.
  • Lawmakers in both Chambers will also hold several hearings this week, including the following:
  • The House Small Business Committee will discuss lowering taxes for small businesses
  • The Senate Finance Committee will examine the Trump Administration’s trade policy agenda
  • The House Financial Services Committee will hold an oversight hearing of the Department of Housing & Urban Development
  • The Senate Armed Services Committee will examine the FY26 defense authorization bill
  • The House Energy & Commerce Committee will discuss the future of AI in American energy competition
  • In the Administration, this week, President Trump will host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the war in Gaza along with new tariffs.
