The Administration
President Biden enters the month of September after signing key pieces of legislation last month, including the Inflation Reduction Act, as well as bills addressing funding for semiconductor chips and veterans’ toxic burn pits.
This week, President Biden is holding a cabinet meeting at the White House with Vice President Harris attending. He will also host the Obamas this Wednesday for the unveiling of the former first family’s official White House portraits. Later this week, Biden will travel to Ohio for the groundbreaking of Intel’s new semiconductor manufacturing facility while touting the recently passed chips funding bill.
Finally, the President is set to nominate Richard Revesz to head up the White House’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, which has great sway over how federal agencies implement executive power. The office has gone without a permanent leader for nearly two years.
The Senate
The Senate returns from its August and Labor Day recesses this week as Democrats make one last push at their legislative agenda before the November midterms.
September 30 is the next benchmark when the government will run out of funding unless lawmakers pass a budget, although a temporary stopgap is more likely to occur which will give members more time to reach a bipartisan agreement on government funding.
This week, the Senate will take up judicial nominations and will hold several committee meetings:
- The Senate Judiciary Committee’s Intellectual Property Subcommittee will hold an oversight hearing of the U.S. Copyright Office.
- The Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee will hold a hearing to discuss current issues in insurance.
The House
The House is out of session for one more week, but will host some committee hearings:
- The House Committee on Education and Labor will hold a hearing to examine workplace protections for child farmworkers.
- The House Committee on Natural Resources will hold a hearing to expand Offshore Wind Energy for the American West.
