The Latino Coalition Statement on the EPIC Act
April 17, 2025
As a leading advocate for Latino-owned businesses and the broader Latino community, The Latino Coalition strongly supports President Trump’s Executive Order urging Congress to address a key flaw in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) — the unfair treatment of small-molecule drugs. Under current law, Medicare can begin negotiating the prices of prescription drugs nine years after FDA approval for small-molecule drugs (such as pills) and 13 years for biologics (injectable drugs). This discrepancy creates a distorted incentive structure, pushing investment toward biologics at the expense of small-molecule drugs — a shift that could disproportionately harm Latino seniors and working families who rely on more accessible, lower-cost medications. To correct this imbalance, we urge Congress to include the bipartisan EPIC Act in the next reconciliation package. This commonsense reform would level the playing field, close the gap permanently, and promote greater equity in drug pricing for all Americans.
