President Trump Set to Deliver State of the Union Address

Congress returns to Washington still seeking a deal to fund DHS as President Donald Trump prepares to deliver his State of the Union address on Tuesday night.

This week, the House of Representatives is set to vote on bills to repeal energy efficiency programs and ease appliance efficiency standards. The House may also take up a concurrent resolution to block military operations against Iran.

Senate leaders continue to negotiate the details of a DHS funding deal. Senate Democrats and the White House swapped proposals over the recess last week, however it remains unclear if the sides are any closer to a potential deal.

Lawmakers in both chambers will convene committee hearings this week, including the following:

• The House Committee on Ways and Means’ subcommittee on Health will discuss the next generation of America’s healthcare workforce
• The House Committee on Small Business will examine pathways for Main Street business success
• The House Committee on Education and the Workforce’s subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education will discuss teaching in the AI age
• The House Committee on Energy and Commerce’s subcommittee on Environment will examine challenges and opportunities for safe, affordable drinking water
• The House Committee on Armed Services’ subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces will discuss modernization of the organic industrial base
