This Women’s History Month, The Latino Coalition is proud to highlight the Hispanic women currently serving in the United States Congress.
Throughout this series, we will spotlight 23 Latina leaders serving in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives — women whose leadership, public service, and policy work help shape the future of our nation.
Latina representation in Congress has grown significantly in recent decades, reflecting the expanding role of Hispanic women in American leadership.
Over the coming weeks, we will recognize each Member and their continued commitment to service.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) First Elected: 1989-2019
In 1989, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen became the first Cuban American woman elected to the United States Congress. Her groundbreaking election represented a historic milestone for Cuban American leadership and broadened Hispanic representation at the national level. We recognize her service and her role in expanding opportunities for women in public life.

Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-NY) First Elected: 1992
In 1993, Nydia Velázquez became the first Puerto Rican woman elected to the United States Congress. Her leadership strengthened representation for Puerto Rican communities and Hispanic small businesses across the country. This Women’s History Month, we celebrate her historic achievement and continued legacy of service.

Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA) First Elected: 1993 – 2023
In 1992, Lucille Roybal-Allard became the first Mexican American woman elected to the United States Congress, representing California. Her historic election marked a significant milestone for Mexican American and Latina representation at the federal level. A lifelong public servant, she helped expand opportunity and elevate the voice of Hispanic communities in Washington. This Women’s History Month, we honor her leadership and the path she helped pave for future generations.
