Washington, D.C. (March 10, 2024) – Today, the Latino Coalition issues the following statement
commending Reps. Greg Murphy (R-NC), Don Davis (D-NC), and Brett Guthrie (R-KY) for introducing
the Ensuring Pathways to Innovative Cures (EPIC) Act, which remedies the unequal period small
molecule drugs and biologics are exempt from the Inflation Reduction Act’s price controls.
“The Latino Coalition enthusiastically supports the EPIC Act because this bipartisan legislation will
ensure that Hispanic-owned and led biotech companies continue to thrive,” stated Carlos Orta,
President & CEO. “Furthermore, The Latino Coalition applauds the Congressmen working to fix the
‘small-molecule penalty’ which will ensure Hispanics have access to innovative healthcare and
greater business opportunities.
The consequences of reduced research will have an outsized effect on the Hispanic community.
Small-molecules show great promise in treating cancer – the leading cause of death in the Hispanic
community. Additionally, these drugs are proving crucial for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease,
which Hispanics are 1.5 times more likely to develop than White Americans. The Latino community
cannot afford to lose out on future research into potentially life-saving small-molecule drugs.
Supporting research and development is also critical for the Hispanic business community, which
contributes more than $800 billion annually to the U.S. economy. By incentivizing investment in small
molecule drugs, we not only bolster the Hispanic biotech industry but also pave the way for broader
economic advancement in our community.
The Coalition urges Congress to pass the EPIC Act.
